Profile: Scallymag

The ScallyMag logoThe Scallymag is a free quarterly magazine aimed at parents and carers of children aged 0-11. It is distributed directly through primary schools in north Huddersfield and is also available at a number of family orientated venues throughout the wider Kirklees area.
The magazine includes regular pre-school and out-of-school diary pages of what is taking place for children in the local area, as well as a ‘What’s On’ guide.  Two full-page ‘Out and About’ features are included in every issue and are written from the honest perspective of an average family seeking an affordable and enjoyable day out.

Every issue is packed full of useful articles from school admissions and appeal procedures, childcare features, health, family law matters, news, a literacy page courtesy of The Children’s Bookshop in Lindley and information on family focused businesses in Huddersfield and beyond.
The magazine runs a front cover art competition in every issue where one local school, nursery or playgroup is asked if their children could design a picture for the front page.

Editor Elaine Jinks-Turner explained: “I am keen that The Scallymag becomes an integral part of the communities it serves.  To achieve this, The Scallymag supports a number of local initiatives to ensure that essential information about services for families and children reaches the right audience. The results of this approach speak for themselves with a loyal and growing stream of followers on Twitter and Facebook.  You can follow The Scallymag on Twitter @Scallymaghudds and ‘Like’ us on Facebook.”

Having met with members of Partnership to discuss working together in order to promote the forthcoming Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival Elaine explained:” I was impressed by the community spirit that existed amongst the business community in Huddersfield and the willingness with which they helped young businesses to make their mark.

“I joined the Partnership because I would like to connect with a range of other businesses and spread the word about The Scallymag so that its popularity as the local family magazine of choice continues to grow.”
